A historic casino, born with the spa town
Divonne-les-Bains has been a spa town since 1849, when Dr Paul Vidart opened his hydrotherapy centre here. French law has restricted casinos to spa and seaside resorts since 1907, so Divonne was entitled to one: it opened in 1954 and soon became one of the largest casinos in France, hugely popular with visitors from Switzerland.
In 1955 the casino moved into the Grand Hôtel, which was enlarged for the purpose. Together with the 4-star hotel and the golf course, it now forms the Domaine de Divonne, owned by the Partouche group since 2005.
The thermal baths, on the other hand, have been closed since late 2022 and a reopening project is under study. Read more in our Divonne-les-Bains guide.
